Tips For Networking: New Kids On The Block

Who loves networking? For those of you who know me, you know that I'm a super nerd when it comes to two things: Networking and LinkedIn. Today, I'll be covering networking, but don't worry, LinkedIn is coming up soon. I know that networking can make some people extremely nervous, BUT I am here to tell you that it doesn't have to be. Here are 4 quick networking tips that are 100% effective and will lead you to your next conversation with the person you are networking with. You've met someone at a virtual or in-person networking meeting and you hopefully grabbed their business card. Now what?

Here are 4 steps to help you in this scenario and increase your confidence as a networker.

1. Write a handwritten note.

I know it sounds crazy in today’s age, but I do this every time and it has never failed me. I can guarantee that it makes you stand out…because of today’s age.

2. Reach out and schedule a time to connect.

This keeps you on their radar and can open opportunities for you in the future – but make sure you’re specific about why you want to meet. Assuming this is a person with a busy schedule who is making time for you, you need to avoid making them guess why they are meeting with you.

3. Set a follow-up time (for yourself) in the future to reach out.

Set a reminder in your calendar to reach out in 3, 6, or 9 months to avoid going a year without connecting.

4. Note things they enjoy and don't be afraid to send them articles that might interest them in the future.

It shows you're thinking of them but not just reaching out for nothing. Also, note*** do not send them something every week. After all, we do want to play hard-to-get a little, don’t we?

Today’s tips were pulled from the following YoPros’ (and some trusted “experienced” professionals!) stories who covered everything from networking to find a job to networking to keep a job…

Now that you are caught up on the biggest networking tips, I’m sending you off with a challenge. To get out there and network using these tips!

Happy networking!
